At Say Oui To Français, our Learn French with Comics Workshops are unlike anything you’ve ever experienced. Instead of textbooks, we use a French or Francophone comic book (bande dessinée) as the heart of the lesson. Each workshop runs over 6 to 8 weeks, and every session feels more like a conversation among friends than a classroom.

What Happens in a Learn French with Comics Workshop in Edinburgh

Each week, you’ll read about 15 to 30 pages of the comic at home, using a detailed study guide that helps you:

• Understand key vocabulary and cultural references
• Reflect on comprehension questions
• Engage with the story at your own pace

When we meet in class in Edinburgh, we:

• Discuss the story and share insights
• Explore a new grammar or vocabulary topic straight from the comic
• Reinforce it through games, role-plays, theatrical activities, and creative speaking exercises

You’ll see grammar and vocabulary come alive in a meaningful context, and retain it effortlessly.

Unlike traditional classes where grammar stays in your notebook, here you’ll use it in conversations, debates, and creative writing inspired by the comic book. You’ll also receive fun homework: short, reflective writing tasks that encourage you to think, imagine, and express yourself in French. Many of my students say this is one of their “favourite parts” because it helps them connect personally with the story and the language.
