Did you know that 100% of the participants who attend my Learn French with Comic Books workshops in Edinburgh return for the next one?
You might wonder, what makes them so special? Let me tell you why these workshops have become one of the most loved and effective ways to learn French in Edinburgh at Say Oui To Français.
Forget Textbooks — Learn French Through Real Stories
My comic book workshops are nothing like traditional French classes. Instead of relying on dusty old textbooks and contrived dialogues, we dive into authentic French and Francophone comic books filled with beautiful, engaging, and thought-provoking stories.
Each book we explore is rich with emotion, humour, and cultural context. My students learn new vocabulary and grammar structures naturally, through the characters and conversations that unfold in the story.
They quickly realise that they’re not just learning French from a book, they’re learning the French that people actually speak.
Learning Without Realising You’re Learning
Here’s the best part: my students make progress almost effortlessly.
Because they’re so engrossed in the story, grammar and vocabulary become intuitive. Through discussions, interactive games, and creative writing activities, they learn to express themselves confidently; often without even noticing how much they’ve improved.
We also go beyond the comic itself, exploring authentic resources like podcasts, interviews, and press articles to deepen our understanding of the book’s themes and cultural background.
And before they know it, their comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency have all levelled up.
What My Students Achieved in a span of 8 weeks this summer
During our summer workshop, we read La Longue Marche des Dindes together over eight weeks. Even though the group was at a beginner (A1 / A2) level, their progress was remarkable.
By the end of 8 weeks, they had:
- Learned and used 50+ idiomatic expressions naturally in conversation
- Discovered French slang usually reserved for advanced learners
- Learned to talk about the future with ease
- Understood and used direct and indirect object pronouns (COD & COI)
- Gained vocabulary related to history, childhood, slavery and racism in the 19th century US
- Learned to express emotions and opinions in authentic, nuanced ways
- Gained confidence in spontaneous conversations about their interests
- Reimagined an alternative ending to the story and created their own comic strips - in French of course!
And all of that while reading a story in French!
Here’s What They Had to Say
Jahnavi's classes are fantastic! I took part in a comic workshop this summer and my French improved so much and so quickly. I am amazed at the progress I made. I would definitely suggest taking part in a comic workshop with Jahnavi as you will be able to learn colloquial French even as a beginner. - Melina
I took part in the Comic Book Workshop and absolutely loved it! The classes were always engaging, with many different fun activities, games and creative writing exercises. It was never boring — time just flew by! Jahnavi creates such a warm and welcoming atmosphere where everyone feels comfortable sharing their ideas. The workshop not only helped me make progress in French but also brought me a lot of joy and motivation to read comics more. I would definitely recommend Jahnavi’s classes to anyone who wants to improve their French in an enjoyable way - Dasha
I’m amazed by how much I learned these last couple of months. Jahnavi introduces games and exercises that make the time just FLY by because you’re having such a good time— and before you know it, you find yourself levelling up massively in all your language skills! I would strongly recommend this for anyone learning French! If there were more teachers like Jahnavi and more language workshops like this available, many many more people would be bilingual—or trilingual! - Sara
These comments remind me why I created this approach: to make learning French a joy, not a chore.
