Learn French in Edinburgh through comic books, creative storytelling and interactive activities

What if learning French also meant understanding World History?

Jahnavi September 2025

What if you weren’t just learning French… but also discovering its culture, History, and the stories that shaped it?

Grammar and vocabulary are essential. They’re the foundation, the building-blocks of every language. But languages are more than a collection of words and rules. They are windows into the minds, emotions, and experiences of the people who speak them.

At Say Oui To Français in Edinburgh, we believe that learning a language should be a holistic, meaningful, and inspiring experience. That’s why, instead of relying on textbooks or artificial dialogues, we learn French through authentic stories, in particular, through the art of French and Francophone comic books or bandes desinées.

Learning French through stories and art

My Learn French with Comic Books Workshops in Edinburgh are very different from traditional group French classes. Each session (6 to 8 weeks long), we explore a powerful graphic novel that weaves together language, history, and emotion; stories that help you feel, think, and connect.

In November, we’ll be diving into two unforgettable and thought-provoking works:

Lebensborn book cover

📖 Lebensborn by Isabelle Maroger: an autobiographical graphic novel that follows a woman’s journey as she uncovers her origins linked to the Nazi Lebensborn program. Through its raw honesty and delicate art, it invites us to reflect on memory, trauma, and the quest for identity.

Group French classes in Edinburgh through comic books

In my French workshops and classes in Edinburgh, my students don’t just read in French, they live the language. We explore words, idioms, and grammar in context, guided by emotion, curiosity, and empathy. We discuss, debate, and reflect together, all in French of course, in a warm, inclusive space where every learner’s perspective matters. You’ll leave each session not only with stronger French skills, but also with a deeper understanding of humanity, identity, and the complexity of our shared histories.
